Registration confirmation & next steps

You're almost done joining Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry.

Thank you for taking this important first step and becoming part of Canada's Lifeline. Your information has been saved to our stem cell registry.

Your unique buccal swab kit number is:

What's next?

  1. Step 1 Buccal swab kit collection

    1. Registering from your home/office/other? We'll be mailing you a buccal (cheek) swabbing kit with instructions on how to complete your buccal swab sample. You'll receive the kit in one to three weeks.
    2. Registering at an event or as part of a campaign and have a swabbing kit, already? Go ahead and complete the buccal swab collection procedure by following the instructions with the kit.

Watch this short video about how to complete your buccal swab.

  2. Step 2 Buccal swab kit return and processing

    1. If you’re registering from home/office/other, once you receive and complete your buccal swab in a few weeks, follow the instructions to pack up your kit and return it to us in the prepaid envelope.
    2. If you’re registering at an event today, provide your kit to a representative before you leave.

Next, we'll process your swab sample and notify you once you are officially searchable on the registry for patients in need.

  3. Step 3 Keep your contact information up-to-date

Your match could be found in a month or several years from now. The best way you can prepare is to make sure we can reach you when the time comes. If your contact information changes at any time, please update your Profile by logging in to your Canadian Blood Services' account, or  call us at 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283).

Preparing to donate

  1. Step 1 Confirm your health

Months or years may pass after you register to become a stem cell donor — we know health can change over time. Our comprehensive health screening will confirm you're still eligible to donate stem cells.

  2. Step 2 Learn donation details at your information session

A registered nurse will get in touch using your contact information provided and schedule a time for your information session which will take place over the phone.

The information session will cover your donation method (PBSC or bone marrow), date, location, upcoming appointments, and other details leading up to and after your donation.
Learn more about the information session.

  3. Step 3 Take a blood test

Our team will arrange a visit for you to a nearby Canadian Blood Services centre, where we'll collect your blood samples to test for infectious diseases.

  4. Step 4 Receive a physical examination

Your physical examination will be performed by a physician at the hospital where your donation will take place. The exam will cover routine medical tests to confirm your state of health. This ensures your donation will not be a risk to you or the patient.

  5. Step 5 Confirm your participation

Once you've been medically cleared, you'll be asked to sign a participation consent form before we notify the transplant centre. The patient will then begin their pre-transplant treatments (e.g., chemotherapy and/or radiation).

  6. Step 6 Donate to the patient

After your stem cells have been collected, these will be transported to the transplant centre and infused into the patient.
